The history

La Cervetta is an ancient symbol of the Gonzaga’s medieval period. The spotless creature, able to perceive the dangers and portraited with a leg raised in the action to hit with its hoof the untrustworthy snake, keeps its force turning the look towards the radiant sun. It is accompanied to a scroll under the form of a wrapping tape, that brings the written one in ancient German “bider craft”, that means “contra possanza”.

Thus La Cervetta becomes an allegory of the vigilance towards the dangers and the violence, to face with careful but magnanimous spirit and peacemaker, worthy of a great prince. Many times the Cervetta is represented inside of the famous Palazzo Ducale, magnificent palace of the Gonzaga’s family; it is found in the medieval annex and in the Castello di San Giorgio, painted here from the great Andrea Mantegna for the marquis Ludovico in the renowned Camera Picta. Together with other allegorical symbols, it represents the expression and the testimony of the ideals and the principles of the gentleman that will show off it.
